Surgery is invasive and should be a last resort (unless it's in response to impact trauma). All too often, people have multiple surgeries at the pain site without addressing the pain source.
A good example of identifying the difference between pain site and pain source is knee pain; most individuals who have knee pain have weak and atrophied hip (glute) muscles, and by simply (a) removing the negative and (b) strengthening the hip muscles, symptoms improve.
